In der Ausstellung Mahlzeit zeigt Imi Knoebel eine Serie von drei Tischen, von denen zwei aus drei – und einer aus zwei Elementen besteht. Als Tisch funktioniert, je nach Bedarf, sowohl das einzelne Element als auch die jeweils vorgegebene, puzzleartige Gesamteinheit.
Die Tische tragen Knoebels Handschrift in Form, Farbe und Material. Stärke und Umriss der Tischplatten erinnern an seine Wandobjekte. Die klaren Farben trägt Knoebel von Hand auf, sein malerischer Duktus ist sichtbar. Mit diesem Konzept greift Knoebel eine seiner Arbeiten aus dem Jahr 1982 wieder auf, einen Tisch, den er damals anlässlich einer Einzelausstellung im Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven in einer Auflage von 25 Exemplaren produzieren ließ.
In the exhibition Mahlzeit, Imi Knoebel shows a series of three tables, of which two consist of three elements and the other consists of two. As need be, individual elements can function as tables as well as the predefined, jigsaw-puzzle-esque whole.
The tables exhibit Imi Knoebel’s trademark shapes, colors and materials. Thickness and contours of the table tops are reminiscent of his wall-based objects. Knoebel applies the bold colors by hand, letting his characteristic painterly style show through. With this concept, Knoebel returns to one of his works from 1982, a table that he had produced in an edition of 25 for a solo show at the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven at the time.
